Meisner Technique & Our Studio

Living Truthfully Under Imaginary Circumstances

About the Meisner Technique

Our technique of choice was developed by Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse from 1935-1990. Meisner's cutting-edge approach taught students to stop "acting" and instead connect and react honestly to their partners from moment to moment.

Meisner is currently one of the most popular techniques taught in New York and L.A. Learning the Meisner technique at the Actor’s Workshop will give those who want to pursue acting as a hobby a unique opportunity to learn the technique of professionals. Those who wish eventually to move to New York or L.A. will be armed with the ability to compete with professionals and will have an exemplary addition to their resume.

Meisner at the Actor's Workshop

The foundation of the Meisner technique is the repetition exercise. From there, it builds into a toolbox flexible enough to handle any acting challenge. Students have the opportunity to observe and learn from every stage in the work.

  • First semester: repetition exercise
  • Second semester: emotional preparation
  • Third semester: character work
  • Fourth semester: external circumstances, relationships, intentions
  • Fifth semester: script analysis and monologues

Cold Readings and Audition Training

The Actor’s Worskhop also includes training in cold readings and audition improv, a must for those planning to attend auditions for television or film. Cold readings are a fun and immediate way to see the positive impact Meisner has on your acting ability. During fall and spring semesters, students also practice their skills by preparing scenes for our public showcase.

Productions: Applying Technique

Current students and alumni apply their technique to a full length play in our productions. Students learn advanced script analysis, micro-prepping, and much more.
